    Response

    8. Briefly describe practical actions the company has taken during the reporting period and/or plans to take to implement the human rights principles, including any challenges faced and actions taken towards prevention and/or remediation.

Human rights principles are included in detail in our policies and procedures. Our employees can access these policies and procedures from areas such as digital platforms, social compliance boards and QDMS. All of these documents are reviewed every 6 months. Our policies are also brought to the agenda at management-level meetings held every 3 months and revised if necessary. Whether all the documents are reviewed or not is monitored with the document tracking table. Yeşim, which holds the SA8000 Certification, is continually audited via this document that meets all human rights standards, and ensures the continuity of the certification by meeting the necessary criteria. In these audits, rapid actions are taken based on the findings that are open to improvement. Yeşim has held the SA8000:2014 Certificate, one of the most prestigious documents in the world for the issue of “Social Compliance”, since 2005. Yeşim, which was the first garment firm to receive the SA8000: 2014 Certificate in Turkey, has continued its social compliance efforts in the same way in the past 16 years and has ensured the continuity of the certificate in 2021 after the SA8000: 2014 Social Compliance Audits it has passed twice in different periods during the year. Certificate renewal audit was carried out in 2021. The validity of the document will continue until 2023. Yeşim, which is one of 38 firms to hold this document in Turkey, has continued to conduct its activities in this area at the same pace and with the same sensitivity for many years. Yeşim is systematically audited with regard to the conditions of social compliance in the independent audit models of the firms it serves in the field of textiles and ready-to-wear in which it operates. Moreover, Yeşim, which also undergoes periodic auditing processes in the name of the system certificates that it currently holds, maintains the validity of these certificates by successfully completing these audits. In the audits that are performed, actions are taken in areas considered to be risky and all the required improvements are carried out as quickly as possible. The Social and Labour Convergence Programme (SLCP), which has constituted an important model in this subject in recent years, consists of a joint auditing process with which world-famous garment brands will accept a single social compliance audit. Yeşim was chosen as the pilot firm for the implementation of the first joint audit for this project, thanks to its many years of experience in this field, and the first of the SLCP audits was carried out successfully in January 2018. In 2019 and 2020 the development of the SLCP process was supported. In 2021, SLCP audit started to be performed at our factory and at all our suppliers. Based in the Netherlands, the SLCP Platform aims to improve working conditions in the global supply chain by eliminating the need for more than one social compliance audit by means of the joint audits it carries out. International brands in the textile and apparel sector, and suppliers to these brands, have the opportunity to reduce costs and use resources more effectively by coming together under one roof. The platform has over 200 signatories, including manufacturers, brands, agencies, sectoral associations and service providers. OEKO-TEX STeP Certification, which aims to ensure the continued existence and implementation of environmentally friendly production processes and of socially acceptable working conditions in production facilities within the textile chain, is given to companies following certain audits. Yeşim is a company that has adopted the principle of carrying out production within the framework of transparent and sustainable manufacturing conditions that will gain the trust of the public. This competence of the firm has also been approved by various independent organisations. In addition, Yeşim's Gender Equality Policy was updated in accordance with Article 190 of the International Labor Organization in the relevant reporting period.

While expanding our production capacity, we never compromise on environmental sensitivity. In the steps we take, we always prioritize the concepts of social compliance, sustainability and social responsibility. Based on this, we shape our energy management and environmentally friendly production activities according to our Energy and Environmental Policy. With our environmentally friendly sustainable activities, our energy-friendly projects, and our waste reduction and recycling efforts, we have adopted the principle of avoiding damage to nature at every stage of production. Moreover, since the very first day of our foundation, we have endeavored to integrate the “Green Factory” understanding into all our business processes. Recently, with a European ideal, the EU countries have signed the EU Green Deal, in which it is planned that carbon emissions will reach zero by 2050. This agreement includes the steps to be taken by the year 2024 for clean production. If things go as planned, there will be no greenhouse gas emissions to nature from the EU geographical area in 2050. In line with this goal, Europe aims to bring about a comprehensive transformation ranging from industry to agriculture, and from transport to energy. In the light of all these developments, industrialists in Turkey also have an important role to play since, as is known, the EU market is our country’s largest trading area. At Yeşim, we have been carrying out important work in this area for some time. We registered with the carbon performance improvement initiative system (CPI2) in our home textiles department in 2014. CPI2 stands out as an initiative by European retail companies that aim to be active pioneers in climate protection. This improvement system, which is also supported by Yeşim’s customers, aims to systematically lower energy costs and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. We continue to carry out important work related to the transition to green energy. Within this scope, another important development at Yeşim has been in the field of energy consumption. Signing another eco-friendly initiative, Yeşim collaborated with the Max Energy company to obtain the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC). Within the scope of this collaboration, in 2022, we will have the chance to minimize the carbon footprint and further strengthen our “Green Factory” identity by obtaining the electricity we consume at our Bursa plant from renewable energy sources. While developing our green energy projects, we have in the meantime accelerated our environmentally friendly energy management approaches. Following the valuable steps we have taken in this context, we have also earned the right to receive “Zero Waste Certification”. We have established a zero waste management system at the Bursa plant in compliance with the Zero Waste Regulation issued by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. This system ensures that generated wastes are properly disposed of in accordance with the designated waste bins in areas where zero waste bins are placed.

    Overall Environment

    21. Briefly describe practical actions the company has taken during the reporting period and/or plans to take to implement the environment principles, including any challenges faced and actions taken towards prevention and/or remediation.

Yeşim's environmental policy Yeşim, which manufactures for world brands, listens to nature and handles all its environmental projects with the sensitivity of a tailor. With our environmentally friendly sustainable activities, our energy-friendly projects, and our waste reduction and recycling efforts, we have adopted the principle of avoiding damage to nature at every stage of production. Yeşim, which put its own treatment plant into operation in 2002, is among the first examples in its field with its water treatment capacity of 7 thousand tons per day and structure that meets international standards, and the wastewater coming out of the plant is inspected online 24 hours a day by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality. Within this scope, in 2016, our company entered the factory data online and received online improvement recommendations according to these data. Accordingly, following the efforts we began in 2017, Yeşim succeeded in achieving an improvement of 3 percent in carbon performance in 2018, 5 percent in 2019, and 5.5 percent in 2021. In terms of carbon emissions, our target is to reduce this value by 40-50 percent by the year 2025. We have numerous energy saving projects that we have specified and are working on. We aim to reduce our carbon emission figures especially with the transition project to state-of-the-art steam boilers that work with natural gas. The infrastructure work on this subject has been completed. We will launch this new investment in the near future. In addition, with our investments in the latest technology energy and water saving machinery, we have focused on reducing our emission rates by using solar energy in exterior lighting. By continuing to obtain our electricity supply from the hydroelectric power plant, we are maintaining our target of reducing emissions in this regard. While revising the existing motors of the machines in our company, we are continuing to replace them with IE4 efficient motors. We also enable energy saving by increasing the use of more eco-friendly chemicals, thereby reducing our emissions. We are continuing the insulation of surface dyeing machines. By realizing all our current projects, we aim to reach our target by 2025. Jade Textile, which continues its activities in Egypt as a subsidiary of the Yeşim group, has also begun important work based on obtaining the electricity it uses for production from sustainable energy sources. When the project is completed, approximately one third of the electricity consumption at the Ismailia plant will be provided by solar energy systems. This project will also pave the way for the entire electricity consumption at the plant to be obtained from sustainable energy sources. We can say that we have completed the investment work. Following the designation of the company that will undertake the installation process for this project, the necessary action will be taken and environmentally friendly, sustainable energy will begin to be used in the production process at the plant. With this 1,661 MW project, which will be shaped with an investment of approximately 1 million dollars, we aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.6 tons per year and save 200 thousand dollars per year.
