MARY KAY INC & THE ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION Forest and trees are the #1 nature-based solution to climate change and its affordable and scalable. Our Arbor Day projects contribute to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 through 1t.org. 1t.org connects, empowers and mobilizes a global reforestation community of millions to ensure the conservation and restoration of one trillion trees within this decade. 1t.org is a World Economic Forum initiative, designed to support the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, led by UNEP and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Mary Kay contributed 1,130,000 trees on Day 1. Mary Kay’s latest trees report details three cumulative benefits to planting trees through the work the partnership has completed so far. • Carbon: Planting, protecting, and managing trees absorb carbon. As trees grow, carbon is removed from the atmosphere into trunks, roots, and branches. o Metric Tons of CO2 Sequestered to Date: 1,018,021 • Water: Trees and forests play a vital role in water quality and quantity. Healthy trees and forests reduce soil erosion, filter stormwater and agricultural irrigation, enhance rainfall infiltration, and reduce surface runoff o Gallons Avoided Water Runoff: 81,902,445 (equal to 930,710 people with clean water) • Air: Trees produce oxygen that we breathe. In addition, trees remove air pollution by lowering air temperature, by releasing water into the atmosphere, and by filtering particulates. o Tons of Air Pollutants Removed: 4,236 In 2021, Mary Kay Inc. completed six main planting projects in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. These included: • 7,000 trees in Brazil’s Indigenous Fire Recovery Project • 26,496 trees in the Mississippi River Valley • 49,004 trees in Florida’s Tyndall Air Force Base • 7,500 trees in China’s Gansu Province and Inner Mongolia Forests • 5,000 trees in Cajamarca and Amazonia, Peru • 5,000 trees in Germany’s Insect Restoration Forests. This year our partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation supports 3 independent projects in 2022 with a goal of planting nearly 100,000 trees: Key Focus: Carbon, biodiversity, fighting climate change, protecting rare plants and species, water, native ecosystems, and restoring habitats Impact: Carbon dioxide sequestered, pollution removed, rainfall intercepted, wildlife preservation, and increasing the use of agroforestry as a sustainable source of income for local farmers. PROJECTS INCLUDE: Brazil: 10,000 trees • Project details: The country’s Atlantic Forest, a tropical jungle on the other side of the country from the Amazon Rain Forest, has faced centuries of degradation due to agriculture, illegal logging, and development. Once the size of Texas, only a mere 12% remains today. Restoration of this tropical landscape will mean critical habitat for a diverse mix of flora and fauna, clean water for more than 100 million South Americans, and large-scale carbon sequestration. Madagascar: 39,000 trees • Project details: Our partnership with Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership is focused on reversing the destruction of forest habitat that is home to critically endangered lemurs and other wildlife species found nowhere else on Earth. Tree planting efforts are underway to rebuild the lush landscape. Locals are becoming actively involved in reestablishing the rain forest canopy, creating habitat for lemurs and a better way of life for the people of Madagascar. Econfina Creek and Chipola River Water Management Areas, FL: 43,000 trees • Project details: In 2018, Hurricane Michael destroyed thousands of acres of timber in Florida’s Econfina Creek and Chipola River watersheds. Planting longleaf and slash pines will restore native groundcover to the area. Longleaf pine trees in particular will resist water beetles, better tolerate wildfire and wind events, and require less water. This is especially important because Econfina Creek is the primary source of drinking water for Bay County and the surrounding areas.
